Trained dogs bring new hope to Zimbabwe’s fight against poaching
Story 2
A specialised team from Wales is training dogs to help stop poaching across southern Africa.
Starting as puppies, the dogs are exposed to various scents and sounds, including African wildlife, to prepare them for fieldwork.
One dog, Shinga, recently tracked a poacher 4.5 kilometres back to his home at Zimbabwe’s Imire Conservancy, leading to an arrest.
Trainers Darren Priddle and Jacqui Law raise and prepare puppies for tracking, scent detection, and obedience to support anti-poaching units.
These dogs are becoming vital tools in protecting endangered species and helping rangers catch criminals.
