Tshwane University of Technology’s Vianney Witesyavwirwa Kambale has earned the Best Paper Award at the 2025 IEEE ICTAS Conference.
His research focused on improving AI forecasting tools through knowledge distillation, making them accessible on devices with limited processing power.
The study offers important insights for applications in energy, healthcare, IoT, and finance.
Vianney is pursuing a doctorate in Austria and lectures in AI and Machine Learning at TUT.
His achievement highlights TUT’s rising profile in innovative research across Africa and the world

Table Mountain Cableway reopens after essential maintenance

The Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company has reopened to visitors following a week-long maintenance shutdown from July 28 to August 3.
This annual closure ensures safety and efficiency, with key upgrades including the replacement of all four track cables for the first time since 1997.
Visitors were still able to enjoy hiking and cycling on the mountain during the shutdown.
TMACC’s commitment to safety and sustainability has earned it recent tourism awards and nominations.
The cableway offers spectacular 360-degree views of Cape Town and the surrounding natural beauty.

DStv Delicious Festival announces star-studded line-up for September

Organisers of the DStv Delicious International Food & Music Festival have announced the headline acts for this year’s event at the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit.
US rapper Don Toliver will lead Saturday’s main stage on 20 September, joined by South African stars Kwesta and Inkabi Zezwe.
The line-up also features rising acts like Rap Academy, Kamo Mphela, Distruction Boyz and Masterpiece YVK.
Organisers say the Channel O Dance Stage will showcase top DJs including ASHOJU and Oscar Mbo on Saturday, with Sandy Rivera, DJ Tira and Lulo Café taking over on Sunday.
The festival runs from 20 to 21 September and promises a bold mix of music, dance and culture.
