World’s strongest water lily pads put to the test
Story 3
The Denver Botanic Gardens recently hosted a global competition, the Water Lily Weigh Off, to see how much weight giant water lily pads could hold before sinking.
Over 30 zoos and gardens across nine countries participated, stacking sandbags, bricks, and even oranges on the pads.
Florida’s Bok Tower Gardens claimed the top spot with 183 pounds, followed closely by Missouri Botanic Gardens at 182 pounds, and Huntsville Botanical Garden in Alabama with 176 pounds.
The pads, from species Victoria cruziana and Victoria amazonica, can grow six feet across in just three months and feature a natural network of ribs and air-trapping structures that make them incredibly strong.
The event highlighted both the engineering marvels of nature and the creativity of participating gardens.
