Young Field Band Performers Compete In Johannesburg

The Field Band Foundation brought young performers from across South Africa to Johannesburg for its 29th National Championships at DP World Wanderers Stadium.
Bands from places including Alexandra, Soweto, Cape Town, Blouberg and Mandini took part in the finals, performing routines combining music, marching, dance and choreography.
Each band had eight minutes to perform a routine they had rehearsed throughout the year, with judges deciding the top performers.
The championships give young people an opportunity to develop their musical and performance skills while competing on a national stage.

Young Innovator’s Maths App Reaches Learners Worldwide

Twenty six year old developer Lesedi Mochadibane has developed a Mathematics app to help learners prepare for exams.
The platform provides simplified notes and revision material, making difficult Mathematics concepts easier to understand and practise.
Mochadibane says the app has already reached learners beyond South Africa, with students using it in countries including Kenya and the United States.
He hopes the platform can continue giving more learners access to accessible Mathematics support.

TUT Team Makes History In Solar Challenge

Tshwane University of Technology’s Sunchaser 4 has become the first South African team to win the Sasol Solar Challenge.
The team also became the first local entrant to complete the challenge’s newly designed full route without assistance, covering 2 369 kilometres in a solar powered car.
Sunchaser 4 was the only vehicle to reach the Ceres control stop without a trailer and went on to finish first overall in Franschhoek.
Teams from Switzerland and India finished second and third, while the competition also saw teams share engineering ideas and technology as they travelled towards the finish.

Ancient Syrian Christian Site Reopens After 14 Years

Syria’s Saint Simeon church complex has reopened to visitors after 14 years, following restoration work at the ancient site in Aleppo.
The 5th century Byzantine complex was damaged during Syria’s civil war and the 2023 earthquake.
Restoration included clearing landmines, strengthening fragile structures and repairing damaged facilities, with new pilgrimage routes also added.
The site is part of the UNESCO listed Ancient Villages of Northern Syria and is now welcoming visitors again.
