Midrand Chess Club duo represent Johannesburg at OR Tambo Soncini Games

Two 13-year-olds from Midrand Chess Club, James Lombard and Kalauba Maake, represented Johannesburg at the 2025 OR Tambo Soncini Social Cohesion Games at Ellis Park Arena.
The annual tournament brought together top youth athletes from Gauteng’s five municipalities, competing in various sports including chess.
Coach Kgosimang Molefe said their selection highlights the club’s growing success in developing young talent.
Johannesburg finished second behind Ekurhuleni, with both players performing strongly and gaining valuable experience.
The club now plans to host more tournaments and revive its schools league ahead of next year’s Games.
