Soweto unites for mental health awareness

The South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) marked the end of Mental Health Awareness Month with a march at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto on October 31.
The event brought together community members, healthcare workers, patients, and stakeholders to raise awareness, combat stigma, and show support for those living with mental health challenges.
Through its #TogetherForMentalHealth campaign, SADAG emphasised the need for accessible care and stronger services, while participants engaged in activities like aerobics to highlight the link between physical and mental well-being.
Cassey Chambers, SADAG operations director, said the march symbolises action, encouraging people to seek help and reinforcing community support for mental health.

Gondwe calls for opportunity-driven TVET to tackle youth unemployment

Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Training, Dr Mimmy Gondwe, has called for a shift in South Africa’s skills strategy towards an ‘opportunity-driven’ TVET model.
She spoke at the Going Global Conference 2025 in London, promoting TVET and community colleges as engines for youth employment and innovation.
Gondwe said the new approach aims to go beyond current job training, focusing on creating new economic opportunities in emerging sectors like the green economy, digital innovation, and community enterprises.
The initiative includes industry-relevant curricula, digital learning, and international exchange programmes to modernise training and improve graduate employability.
The government is seeking to position TVET as a key contributor to economic growth and youth skills development.

Pungulu Party! brings African nursery rhymes and culture to life in Nairobi

Kenyan production company Pungulu Pa Productions will host Pungulu Party!, a children’s festival, at Ngong Race Course in Nairobi on 7 December.
The event is inspired by the animated series Uli & Tata’s African Nursery Rhymes and will offer live performances, puppet shows, African nursery rhyme sessions, and creative workshops for families.
Activities will also include traditional games and interactive storytelling, giving children hands-on experiences with African music, art, and culture.
A dedicated marketplace will showcase locally made toys, fashion, art, and food, highlighting Kenyan creativity.
Organisers say the festival aims to provide families with immersive cultural experiences that celebrate African heritage and learning.
