University of Johannesburg Launches Augmented Reality Heritage Experience at Melville Koppies
Story 1
The University of Johannesburg, together with the Melville Koppies Management Committee, has launched an augmented reality heritage experience at the Melville Koppies Nature Reserve in Johannesburg.
The project brings a 500-year-old African smelting site to life using smartphone based technology that overlays a digital reconstruction onto the existing archaeological remains.
Developed by UJ’s Metaverse Research Unit, the experience aims to make pre-colonial engineering, craftsmanship and environmental knowledge more accessible to the public through interactive storytelling.
The initiative forms part of a wider effort to preserve cultural heritage while using digital innovation to improve education and public engagement at historical sites.
