Philadelphia Schools Guarantee Recess and Bathroom Breaks
Teaser / Tailpiece story
Schools in Philadelphia have adopted a new wellness policy that guarantees learners regular recess and access to bathroom breaks during the school day.
The programme also prevents teachers from removing these basic needs as punishment and requires movement breaks for elementary school learners every 90 minutes.
The changes were approved after advocacy from the community group Lift Every Voice and followed an eight hour meeting by the Philadelphia Board of Education.
The policy also bans collective punishments such as silent lunches and aims to support a healthier learning environment for pupils.
