Wildlife Bridge Reconnects Australian National Parks for Native Species
Teaser / Tailpiece story
A newly completed wildlife overpass south of Sydney is helping reconnect fragmented habitats between Heathcote National Park and Royal National Park, giving species such as koalas, quolls, wombats and echidnas a safe way to cross a busy highway.
The bridge forms part of a carefully designed ecological corridor featuring vegetated pathways, rope systems for gliding marsupials and ground level cover for smaller animals.
Ecologists say the structure is vital for reducing road deaths, improving genetic diversity and allowing wildlife populations to recover in areas increasingly cut off by roads, development and climate related bushfires.
