Learners clean Lagoon Beach collect litter
Story 3
Forty-eight young learners took part in a Junior River Wardens programme at Lagoon Beach in Cape Town, where they collected more than 112 kilograms of litter along the coastline.
The City of Cape Town, together with partner organisations, led the activity ahead of World Ocean Day to teach learners about marine conservation.
Learners from three primary schools joined beach clean-ups and sorted waste such as plastic bottles, cans and fishing line while learning how pollution affects the ocean.
The collected litter was removed by the city’s waste services after the exercise.

Uber expands autonomous vehicle data fleet
Teaser / Tailpiece story
Global e-hailer Uber is expanding its fleet of autonomous vehicles to collect data.
The initial fleet of 50 modified electric vehicles will be fitted with an array of sensors, including cameras, remote sensing systems and radar units.
Unlike robo-taxis, the vehicles will be driven by humans and used to gather detailed road and traffic data that can help train autonomous driving systems.
The company plans to have the full 500-unit fleet ready later in the year and expects the network to generate 3.2-million-kilometres of driving data each month.
