Deaf children get stories in Sign Language

A partnership between Stellenbosch University and Book Dash is giving Deaf children across South Africa access to stories in their own language.
Through the university’s Handlab project, more than 200 African children’s picture books are being translated and recorded in South African Sign Language.
Deaf storytellers from across the country signed each story on camera, with recording camps held in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban.
For the first time, Deaf children can explore the full Book Dash library in sign language, supporting early language, learning and family connection.

Fela Kuti receives Lifetime Achievement Award

The late Nigerian artist Fela Kuti has became the first African to be honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Recording Academy.
He was recognised for pioneering the Afrobeat genre and using music as a tool of resistance.
Kuti was bestowed the honour alongside other international heavyweights, including Whitney Houston, Chaka Khan, Cher and Paul Simon.
