Four top-performing matric learners in Soweto have received cash vouchers worth a combined 30-thousand rand.
Makubenjalo Restaurant handed over the awards on January 23 to two learners each from Bopasenatla and Immaculate Secondary Schools. The top achievers received 10-thousand rand, while second-place learners received 5-thousand rand.
Owner Katlego Bogatsu says the initiative is aimed at motivating learners and supporting them as they prepare for tertiary studies. The recipients will also receive ongoing mentorship.
Bopasenatla recorded a 100-percent pass rate, while Immaculate achieved 95 percent.

The Timbavati Nature Reserve in Limpopo has recorded the birth of a white lion cub for the first time in more than ten years.
White lions are rare in the wild, requiring both parents to carry a specific recessive gene, and populations have been severely reduced by hunting and poaching.
The cub was born into the reserve’s Giraffe Pride and will rely on adult males to protect its territory. Officials say strict protocols are in place to limit human disturbance and ensure the safety of the mother and cub.

Hillbrow resident Tebogo Mabye mentors young people and leads community tours that focus on the neighbourhood’s history and potential.
Through the Jozi My Jozi Walks initiative, he takes visitors to local landmarks and connects residents with opportunities for growth.
Mabye, who experienced homelessness and spent time in a shelter, has built a career as a chef, barista, kickboxing champion and former MasterChef South Africa contestant.
He says food and mentorship are tools he uses to build relationships and support development within the community.
