Gauteng opens late applications for Grade 1 and Grade 8

The Gauteng Education Department says late applications for Grade 1 and Grade 8 will open on 17 December.
The province has already placed nearly 89 percent of learners for 2026 through the online admissions system. Most remaining cases are linked to missing documents or parents holding onto multiple offers.
The department says it is creating more classroom space and working to secure spots for all unplaced learners.

Late gospel star Solly Moholo to receive posthumous SAMA Lifetime Achievement Award

The late South African gospel artist Solly Moholo will be honoured with a posthumous Lifetime Achievement Award at the 31st South African Music Awards on 14 December.
Moholo, known for his mokhukhu style and energetic performances, released more than 15 albums over a career spanning more than two decades.
Born in Soshanguve and inspired by the Zion Christian Church, his music brought gospel to wider audiences across South Africa and neighbouring countries.
He was also active in community initiatives, supporting young people and children with disabilities.
RiSA says Moholo’s influence continues to uplift and inspire, celebrating his contribution to South African music and culture.

Teen author and footballer earns UK bursary

Fifteen year old South African footballer and published author Bokang Phiri has secured a fifty percent football and academic bursary from Plymouth College in the United Kingdom.
This is the first time Plymouth College has awarded such an opportunity to an international student-player.
His family says support from the community has already begun building momentum as they prepare for his move early next year.
Phiri has written three children’s books and hopes to continue inspiring young readers while pursuing his academic and football ambitions abroad.
