Banyana beat Burkina Faso, reach quarter-finals

Banyana Banyana have booked their place in the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals after beating Burkina Faso 1-nil in Casablanca.
Thembi Kgatlana scored the only goal in the 21st minute to keep South Africa's title defence alive.
Banyana also needed Ivory Coast to beat Tanzania, and the Ivorians delivered with a 2-1 victory to secure South Africa's place in the last eight.
South Africa will now face tournament hosts Morocco in Saturday's quarter-final.

St Stithians makes New York film history

A group of St Stithians College learners has made history as the first South African school selected for the All-American High School Film Festival in New York.
Their student-made film, The Play (or the Failure Thereof), was chosen from more than 2,500 entries across 40 countries and will be screened in October.
The Grade 10 and Grade 11 learners produced the film themselves, handling the writing, acting, filming, and editing.
The achievement highlights the growing talent of young South African filmmakers on the international stage.

Meanwhile, South African learners have finished fourth at the inaugural World Spelling Bee Championships in China.
The result makes the team the highest-ranked African country at the competition.
The Department of Basic Education has welcomed the learners home, praising their performance after competing against some of the world’s top young spellers.
