Canada approves major nickel project with carbon capture technology
Teaser / Tailpiece story
Canada has approved a major nickel mining project in Ontario that aims to combine critical mineral production with large scale carbon capture.
Capturing carbon dioxide helps slow climate change by preventing the gas from building up in the atmosphere.
The Crawford Project is expected to become one of the world's largest nickel mines and will use new technology that stores carbon dioxide in processed rock during mining while producing materials used in stainless steel and electric vehicle batteries.
Developers say the project could capture up to 1.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide each year, with construction expected to begin in 2027.
