South Africa’s leading researchers have been recognised at the 2026 National Research Foundation Awards, held at the Boardwalk Hotel and Casino in Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape on Thursday.
The winners have played significant roles in their fields, with their research addressing challenges facing South Africa and the wider African continent.
The NRF has also increased its support for postgraduate students, with funding for women rising from 53% to 61% and overall support becoming more representative.

Pretoria students gain insight into visual impairment

Students at the University of Pretoria’s Groenkloof Campus were given the opportunity to better understand the experiences of blind and partially sighted people during Disability Week.
The South African National Council for the Blind joined the 1 September event, where students could interact with assistive devices and learn how technology helps people with visual impairments live more independently.
The initiative also encouraged students to ask questions and consider how accessibility can be improved for people with disabilities.
