Pretoria students gain insight into visual impairment

Students at the University of Pretoria’s Groenkloof Campus were given the opportunity to better understand the experiences of blind and partially sighted people during Disability Week.
The South African National Council for the Blind joined the 1 September event, where students could interact with assistive devices and learn how technology helps people with visual impairments live more independently.
The initiative also encouraged students to ask questions and consider how accessibility can be improved for people with disabilities.

More free nature access in the Western Cape

South Africans will have another chance to enjoy the outdoors for free after SANParks National Parks Week.
CapeNature is offering free day entry to selected reserves from 19 to 25 September, following SANParks’ free access week from 7 to 13 September.
Reserves including Kogelberg, Jonkershoek, De Hoop and Robberg will take part, with visitors able to enjoy activities such as hiking and mountain biking.

Eldorado Park walkway celebrates Khoi San heritage

A former dumping ground in Eldorado Park has been transformed into a colourful public art walkway celebrating Khoi San heritage.
New murals on Epsom Street tell stories of indigenous leaders, language and history, while showcasing words such as kwagga, , gogga and eina, which have roots in Khoi languages.
The artwork also honours figures including David Stuurman and Ouma Katrina Esau, while sharing stories of the Khoi San communities that settled in the area.
