Significant progress made with the rollout of smart meters

The National Treasury has reported significant progress in its smart meter rollout, with 67,000 smart meters already installed across 18 municipalities during the last financial year.
The project is part of a R2 billion government initiative targeting a total of 71-municipalities in 3-years, to help the metros with high Eskom debt.
By installing the smart meters the aim is to improve revenue collection, reduce electricity loses and give consumers real-time data on usage empowering them to manage their own consumption more effectively.
Director for local government at the national treasury, Sadesh Ramtaran says the program is already showing positive results:

Seseko, in partnership with Microsoft, has successfully completed a Girls in ICT Bootcamp in Zeerust, North West, empowering 1,000 female students from four local schools.
The week-long initiative introduced girls to future-focused technologies like AI, IoT, and robotics, building their digital literacy, problem-solving skills, and confidence in STEM fields.
Teachers were also equipped with training to integrate 4IR concepts into their classrooms, while schools received learning resources and ongoing support.

His agent confirmed on Tuesday that the 19 year old, who picked up a hamstring concern in Zurich last week, has passed medical tests and returned to training.
Walaza will run in the 100m heats and is part of the 4x100m relay team.
His inclusion boosts Team South Africa's medal chances.
