Croatia declared mine free after three decades
Teaser / Tailpiece story
Croatia has officially declared itself free of landmines, 31 years after its civil war during the breakup of Yugoslavia.
An estimated 1 point 5 million landmines were laid in the 1990s, contaminating vast areas and threatening communities for decades.
After spending more than one billion euros, authorities have cleared all known minefields using metal detectors, heavy machinery and trained dogs.
Interior Minister Davor Božinović says nearly 107 thousand mines and more than 400 thousand pieces of unexploded ordnance were removed under the Ottawa Convention.
The move paves the way for safer communities, expanded farming and renewed tourism.
