Johannesburg hosts World Hunger market day

The City of Johannesburg's Department of Social Development Food Resilience Unit, together with Diepkloof Square, held a market day in Diepkloof to mark World Hunger Day last Thursday.
Small-scale farmers, agro-processors and local businesses from Diepkloof and surrounding areas displayed food products and goods linked to local production.
The initiative forms part of plans to use unused land behind the shopping centre for a community garden aimed at boosting local food production and income opportunities.
Exhibitors used the event to promote their products and highlight the role of locally grown food in strengthening food security.

Nelson Mandela University hosts hunger walk

More than 200 students and staff at Nelson Mandela University took part in a 5-kilometre walk between the South and North campuses to raise awareness of student hunger.
The Mandela Walk for Student Hunger also collected donations of food, toiletries and other essentials for students in need.
University leaders joined the walk, which supports efforts to address basic needs that affect student learning.
Donations collected will be used to support students through the university’s assistance programme.

Boksburg nonprofit clears student debt relief

Hundreds of tertiary students have been given a second chance to continue their studies after a Boksburg-based non-profit settled more than R2 million in outstanding student debt.
The We Solve For X Foundation says the funding has helped students pay registration fees and, in some cases, access qualifications that had been withheld because of unpaid fees.
Founder Tsietsi Ngobese says the initiative is personal to him, having experienced financial exclusion during his own studies:
