Birders raise R200,000 for rare White-winged Flufftail

Conservationists and bird enthusiasts have raised R200,000 for the protection of the White-winged Flufftail during the 2026 Kruger Bird and Wildlife Challenge held in the Kruger National Park.
The ten-day event, organised by BirdLife South Africa and Rockjumper Worldwide Birding Adventures, saw teams travel across the park recording bird and mammal species, logging 363 in total.
Funds will support research and wetland conservation for the Critically Endangered White-winged Flufftail, which has fewer than 2,000 mature individuals remaining, mainly in South Africa.
