Initiative Brings African Children’s Books to Deaf Learners
Story 2
A new initiative is bringing hundreds of African children’s stories to life in South African Sign Language, giving Deaf children access to books in their own language.
Since 2023, Stellenbosch University’s Handlab project, in partnership with Book Dash, has been translating and recording more than 200 picture books in SASL. Deaf storytellers from across South Africa signed each story on camera, creating a rich, expressive library designed with young Deaf readers in mind.
The project supports early language development, literacy, and confidence, while helping families share stories even if they are still learning sign language themselves.
