Flip Flop Day on 20 February

South Africans are invited to participate in Flip Flop Day on February 20 by wearing flip flops to raise funds and awareness for childhood cancer.
The national campaign, led by the Childhood Cancer Foundation South Africa, encourages individuals, schools and workplaces to buy a R10 Flip Flop Day sticker to support affected children and their families.
Funds raised provide accommodation, transport, psycho-social support and education programmes for children undergoing cancer treatment.

Deaf kids get books in sign language

A partnership between Stellenbosch University and Book Dash is giving Deaf children across South Africa access to stories in their own language.
Through the university’s Handlab project, more than 200 African children’s picture books are being translated and recorded in South African Sign Language.
Deaf storytellers from across the country signed each story on camera, with recording camps held in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban.
For the first time, Deaf children can explore the full Book Dash library in sign language, supporting early language, learning and family connection.

Bloem schools get sports boost

Learners from Credence and Heide Primary Schools in Bloemfontein, will benefit from new sports facilities and table tennis equipment to expand access to school sport.
The equipment was handed over by the Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, as part of a youth sport development programme.
The donation, supported by the People’s Republic of China in partnership with MultiChoice and the South African Table Tennis Federation, allows learners to train, practice regularly, and take part in organised sporting activities at school.
