GoFundMe Raises R25 Million for 88-Year-Old US Veteran
Story 3
A GoFundMe campaign in the United States has raised more than 1.5 million dollars — roughly R25.6 million — for 88-year-old Army veteran Ed Bambas.
Bambas has been working full-time at a grocery store in Detroit after not receiving the pension he was owed.
Australian content creator Samuel Weidenhofer launched the fundraiser after meeting him, and donations quickly pushed the campaign far past its original one-million-dollar goal. Contributions came from thousands of people across the country, including a ten-thousand-dollar donation from businessman William Ackman.
Weidenhofer says a trust is now being set up to manage the money securely, and a surprise event will be held to inform Bambas that he will finally be able to retire.
