Pholosong Hospital hosts cataract surgery drive
Story 2
The Gauteng Department of Health says it is working hard to reduce a growing eye care backlog, with more than 9000 patients currently awaiting treatment.
The department launched a special cataract surgery marathon at Pholosong Hospital in Tsakane, east of Johannesburg, where more than 160 patients received treatment.
Officials say the initiative aims to restore sight to visually impaired patients, particularly the elderly and those living with diabetes, for whom cataracts are a common condition.
For many of the elderly patients, cataract surgery is not just a medical procedure but a second chance at life.
