New Underwater Habitat Lets Scientists Stay Submerged for a Week
Story 3
A UK-based company, DEEP, has unveiled Vanguard, a subsea “human habitat” designed to let researchers stay underwater for up to a week.
The prototype, currently 20 meters below the surface in Miami, includes a living chamber, a diving centre, and a base to support up to four occupants.
The habitat is built to withstand ocean pressure and keep scientists safe while they eat, sleep, and conduct research.
A floating structure on the surface supplies air, power, and communication with the outside world.
DEEP plans to use Vanguard for long-term underwater research, including conservation projects such as coral restoration, with deeper versions already in development.
