Western Cape adds 20 new nature reserves
Story 2
The Western Cape has added 20 new nature reserves in the past year, protecting more than 81,000 hectares across key biodiversity areas, including the Cedarberg, Agulhas Plain, Little Karoo and Garden Route.
Many of the newly protected lands come from private landowners, with partnerships, including WWF South Africa, helping secure some of the largest parcels.
CapeNature says the expansion strengthens protection of endangered and unique ecosystems, although more land will be needed to meet global conservation targets of protecting 30% of ecological areas.
The province already protects 2.2 million hectares, and at the current pace it could take 15 to 18 years to reach the target.
