Endangered Bermuda petrel thrives on Nonsuch Island
Teaser / Tailpiece story
Conservationists are celebrating the continued success of the Cahow, or Bermuda petrel, on Nonsuch Island in Bermuda. Once believed extinct for 300 years, the seabird now breeds on the 14-acre island thanks to decades of conservation work.
The Cahow Recovery Program has increased the population from just 18 breeding pairs in 1960 to around 450 birds today.
Artificial nest burrows, predator control, and habitat restoration have turned Nonsuch Island into a thriving wildlife sanctuary and living museum of Bermuda’s pre-colonial ecosystem.
