The Gauteng South leg of the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists took place at the University of Johannesburg’s Soweto campus on 26 July.
Nearly 200 learner projects were showcased and judged by science and technology experts.
The fair gave learners a chance to present creative solutions in areas like climate change, robotics and healthcare.
It forms part of a national drive to grow interest in science and innovation among youth.
Top performers will move on to the International Science Fair in October, with a chance to win prizes, bursaries and global exposure.

New Regional Residency Empowers Women Musicians Across Indian Ocean

The Institut Français de Maurice , together with OXIDE Consulting and a has launched ASSA OI, a unique musical residency for women artists from Mauritius, Rodrigues, Réunion, Seychelles, and Mozambique.
Taking place in Pereybère, Mauritius, from 4 to 9 August 2025, the residency fosters collaboration and blends diverse musical styles.
The project includes a concert on 16 August at the Institut Français de Maurice and a workshop at the University of Mauritius focused on career development and gender equity.
ASSA OI aims to build a strong regional sisterhood, amplify underrepresented female voices, and promote a fairer music industry across the Indian Ocean.
Supported by public and private partners, the initiative plans to grow into a sustainable platform for mentorship, resources, and networking for women creatives.

Young Designer Twala Wins AmaZulu Kit Competition with Bold Cultural Design

Oridile Twala, a 22-year-old designer from Pretoria, has won the AmaZulu 2025/26 kit design competition.
His concept celebrates Zulu culture, incorporating key elements like the spear tip and the Umqhele headgear.
Twala recently graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Interior Design from the University of Johannesburg and sees fashion as a way to showcase his graphic design talents.
The competition was held in partnership with Durban-based Primo Clothing, who will now offer Twala a clothing design internship.
AmaZulu club owner Sandile Zungu praised the design and encouraged Twala to take pride in his achievement.
Twala hopes this win will open doors for new collaborations and help establish his name in the creative industry.
