Njabulo Phungula Wins Busoni Prize

South African composer Njabulo Phungula has won the 2026 Busoni Composition Prize, earning about R131,000 for his work.
The prize is awarded every two to three years to young composers, with the jury recognising Phungula’s approach to composition and attention to sound.
His work has been performed in South Africa, the United States and Europe by music groups.
Phungula will receive the award at a ceremony in Berlin on 13 November.

Kouga Uses Batteries to Cut Power Costs

Kouga Municipality is using a new battery system to cut electricity costs and improve its power supply.
The nearly R20-million system will store electricity bought during cheaper off-peak periods and supply it when demand and tariffs are higher.
It will initially serve St Francis, Sea Vista and Cape St Francis in a three-month trial.
Director in the Koega Municipality, Theo Madatt, says the municipality could expand battery storage and add solar power if the first phase is successful:

Potchefstroom Hockey Player Joins SA U18 Team

Potchefstroom hockey player Moemedi Maboe has been selected for an SA U18 team touring the Netherlands to develop his skills and gain international experience.
The Grade 11 learner is taking part in the Aspire Sport Travel hockey tour.
The tour will expose Maboe to a higher level of hockey and give him experience that can help shape his development as he works towards playing at higher levels.
Maboe says hard work and consistency helped him reach this level, and he hopes the tour will help him grow as a player.

Kenyan Entrepreneur Secures R1.6m for Farming

Kenyan entrepreneur Odwour Midigo has secured about R1.6 million to expand food security and regenerative farming programmes in western Kenya.
He received the funding after winning the 2026 Äänit Prize, which supports African entrepreneurs developing solutions to social, economic and environmental challenges.
Midigo’s Ndaloh Heritage Organisation supports smallholder farmers through agricultural training, digital advice, market access and nutrition programmes.
The funding will help the organisation reach more farmers and communities while improving nutrition, farm incomes and soil health.
