South Africa Wins 19 African Travel Awards

South African tourism businesses and destinations have won 19 of the 89 Africa-wide categories at the 2026 World Travel Awards.
Cape Town won both Africa’s Leading City Destination and Africa’s Leading Meetings and Conference Destination.
The awards span different parts of the tourism sector, including accommodation, aviation, safari and business events.
A further 30 South African tourism and hospitality businesses won awards in the country-specific categories.

Promise Mabilo Wins Stanford Award

South African environmental activist Promise Mabilo has received Stanford University’s 2026 Bright Award for her work fighting air pollution in Emalahleni, Mpumalanga.
Mabilo received the award at a ceremony at Stanford Law School on 28 September.
She founded the Vukani Environmental Justice Movement in Action in 2016 after her son developed asthma and has since organised residents and challenged the government over air pollution.
Her work has helped bring the health concerns of people living in the Highveld to national attention.

Kouga Uses Batteries to Cut Power Costs

Kouga Municipality is using a new battery system to cut electricity costs and improve its power supply.
The nearly R20-million system will store electricity bought during cheaper off-peak periods and supply it when demand and tariffs are higher.
It will initially serve St Francis, Sea Vista and Cape St Francis in a three-month trial.
Director in the Koega Municipality, Theo Madatt, says the municipality could expand battery storage and add solar power if the first phase is successful:

New Academy Develops Young Footballers’ Skills

The newly formed Zane Proactive Sports Academy is giving young footballers a chance to develop their skills through a two-day sports clinic in October.
The clinic will be held at Thaba Eco Estates from 2 October for children aged four to 12, as well as coaches from the southern suburbs.
Participants will take part in football coaching, ball skills, fitness exercises and team games to build their technique, teamwork and confidence.
