7,332 Jobs Created in Johannesburg

Johannesburg’s inner-city regeneration programmes have created jobs and income for 7,332 people and paid out R147 million in wages.
The Johannesburg Inner City Partnership says more than 1,600 people have also received training, while hundreds of small businesses and public spaces have benefited.
The programmes give residents paid work to clean public spaces, maintain infrastructure and improve neighbourhoods while developing new skills.
The organisation is marking its 30th anniversary by highlighting the residents helping to transform Johannesburg’s inner city.

Promise Mabilo Wins Stanford Environmental Award

South African environmental activist Promise Mabilo has received Stanford University’s 2026 Bright Award for her work fighting air pollution in Emalahleni, Mpumalanga.
Mabilo received the award at a ceremony at Stanford Law School on 28 September.
She founded the Vukani Environmental Justice Movement in Action in 2016 after her son developed asthma and has since organised residents and challenged the government over air pollution.
Her work has helped bring the health concerns of people living in the Highveld to national attention.

Offenders Take Part in National Reading Championship

Hundreds of offenders and community book-club participants from across South Africa are taking part in the 16th Funda Mzantsi Championship in George.
The programme uses reading, debating and literacy activities to help offenders develop skills for life after prison.
The Department of Correctional Services says some participants have completed matric and university degrees, while others have developed writing and publishing skills.
