Unisa Brings African Language Cinema To The Fore

The University of South Africa is hosting the inaugural African Languages International Film Festival at its Little Theatre in Pretoria, with the event wrapping up today.
Founded in 2025, ALIFF gives emerging African filmmakers and storytellers a platform to showcase films in languages including isiZulu, Sesotho, Yoruba, Amharic, Kiswahili and Tshivenda.
The festival also connects filmmakers with industry professionals and audiences, creating opportunities to develop their careers and explore new distribution opportunities.
Festival Director Professor Siya Tyali says the festival is about creating a space where African languages are not only represented on screen, but are central to African filmmaking.

Leon Kluge Brings Award Winning Floral Display To Johannesburg

Award-winning South African floral designer Leon Kluge is bringing his acclaimed Life After Fire display to Johannesburg for the first time.
The installation will be recreated at Lifestyle Home Garden from 24 October to 8 November, after gaining attention at the Chelsea Flower Show.
The display celebrates South Africa’s biodiversity through indigenous flowers and charcoal elements, telling a story of fire and regeneration.
Kluge will also host talks about the project, its inspiration and his journey to Chelsea.

University Of Pretoria Researcher Turns Construction Waste Into Building Materials

University of Pretoria professor Elsabe Kearsley and her students have developed sustainable cement and concrete aggregates using construction waste destined for landfills in Johannesburg and Tshwane.
The materials include steel slag, fly ash, plastics, polystyrene and crushed bricks, which can be used to produce strong, lightweight concrete.
The research has already resulted in several patents and could support more sustainable construction while reducing waste.
