Unisa Brings African Language Cinema To The Fore

The University of South Africa is hosting the inaugural African Languages International Film Festival at its Little Theatre in Pretoria, with the event wrapping up today.
Founded in 2025, ALIFF gives emerging African filmmakers and storytellers a platform to showcase films in languages including isiZulu, Sesotho, Yoruba, Amharic, Kiswahili and Tshivenda.
The festival also connects filmmakers with industry professionals and audiences, creating opportunities to develop their careers and explore new distribution opportunities.
Festival Director Professor Siya Tyali says the festival is about creating a space where African languages are not only represented on screen, but are central to African filmmaking.

The SPAR Proteas have secured their place at the 2027 Netball World Cup in Sydney, with their qualification confirmed through the World Netball Rankings.
South Africa were among four African teams to qualify, alongside Uganda, Malawi and Namibia, following the Africa Netball Cup in Nairobi.
The Proteas can now look ahead to next year’s tournament, with their World Cup place already guaranteed before the continental competition reached its final stages.
