School marketer Dibuseng Maboya says learners competed across various age groups, highlighting the growing strength of chess development among young players.

Items such as refrigerators, microwaves and other electronic devices are now being collected as part of the initiative, which seeks to promote responsible waste management while creating economic opportunities for local recyclers.

Recyclers in the region have previously been forced to travel hundreds of kilometres to KwaZulu-Natal to sell electronic waste due to the lack of local recycling facilities.

The programme is expected to ease transportation costs, reduce illegal dumping and create new income streams for communities.
