A new documentary exploring the life and legacy of acclaimed theatre-maker, musician and writer, Dr Mbongeni Ngema, is set to premiere at The Market Theatre today.

The documentary reflects on Ngema’s contribution to the arts as an internationally recognised playwright, composer, choreographer and actor.

Ngema's acclaimed body of work includes Woza Albert, the Tony-nominated Asinamali, the award-winning Sarafina, and the hit song Stimela saseZola
among others.

The documentary has earned recognition, winning Best Documentary Feature Film at the Simon Mabhunu Sabela Film and Television Awards and the Umlazi International Film Festival.

Owetu Zamisa becomes youngest PhD graduate at University of Fort Hare's autumn graduation

27 year old Dr Owetu Zamisa, from Peddie in the Eastern Cape, has been awarded a Doctor of Philosophy in Agricultural Economics by the University of Fort Hare during the institution's 2026 Autumn Graduation this week.

Zamisa is the youngest PhD graduate this year after completing a decade-long academic journey at the University.

Her doctoral study explored how education, market access and cooperative structures can turn beekeeping into a sustainable commercial enterprise for rural communities.

The research places beekeeping at the centre of remote economic transformation in the province, showing how an often-overlooked activity can become a meaningful income source for small-scale farmers.

The nationwide initiative united schools, corporate teams and communities across South Africa in a show of support and solidarity.

This year’s campaign placed dreamers at the centre of the initiative, celebrating their courage, resilience and hope while encouraging South Africans to wear their slippers on Friday the 29th of May, in support of making more dreams come true.

“Fjord” wins Palme d’Or honour at Cannes Film Festival

The 79th Cannes Film Festival concluded in France with the jury, chaired by acclaimed South Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook, awarding the Palme d’Or top prize to the Romanian film "Fjord." Directed by Cristian Mungiu.
