City Power running 2026 schools energy competition

City Power is running the 2026 Energy Efficiency and Demand Side Management Schools Competition for all Johannesburg public, non-fee-paying high schools.
The aim is to inspire learners to explore energy efficiency and renewable energy while developing creative solutions for a sustainable future.
Learners can compete with artistic posters, short videos, or recycled-material models. Prizes include school awards of up to R35 000, laptops for top technology innovators, and the chance for winners to become City Power ambassadors. Entries close on 30 April

Foundation helps 20 learners see clearly in class

Twenty learners at Prestwich Street Primary School in Cape Town can now see clearly in class after receiving new spectacles through the Alive Foundation’s Clear Vision for Learning Project.
The foundation screened 31 children and found that 27 needed glasses, with one learner also referred to an ophthalmologist. With support from Tomlinson Optometrists, 20 of those children have now received their spectacles.
The initiative is helping learners better see the board, read their books, and fully participate in lessons, giving them a stronger chance to reach their potential at school.

Inclusive Bowls Event Marks World Down Syndrome Day in Gauteng

Children and adults with Down syndrome took to the greens at Morningside Country Club last week for a special World Down Syndrome Day celebration.
Hosted by My Bowls Academy in partnership with the Down Syndrome Association Gauteng, the event gave participants a safe, fun space to try lawn bowls and connect with their community.
Director Rob Zimmermann said the initiative is part of ongoing efforts to create inclusive opportunities, while DSAG general manager Jill van der Bijl highlighted the importance of building confidence and skills through sport.
The programme aims to keep expanding, ensuring children with Down syndrome in Gauteng can participate, learn, and feel included in everyday life.
