Golden Girls continue Alberton community upliftment through charity projects

A group of women known as the Golden Girls in Alberton continues to make a difference through long-running charity and community outreach initiatives.
The group, in partnership with the Alberton Lions Club, has over the years donated items such as blankets, beanies, clothing, groceries and bras for breast cancer patients at Charlotte Maxeke Hospital.
Their work, which began more than a decade ago, has grown into an annual effort supporting crèches, homeless shelters and disaster relief projects in the area.
This year, the group also launched a campaign to raise awareness and funds for Motor Neuron Disease after coordinator Gillian van Dyk was diagnosed with the condition.
Family members have joined a Cold Courage Challenge to support the awareness drive and fundraising efforts.

R300 million Youth Fund launched in Qwa-Qwa

The Department of Small Business Development has set aside R300 million to fund youth-owned enterprises across South Africa through the Peo Pele Youth Fund programme.
Minister Stella Ndabeni launched the initiative in Qwa-Qwa in the Free State, aimed at expanding opportunities for young entrepreneurs and marking 50 years since the 1976 Youth Uprising.
The programme is designed to support SMMEs by improving access to funding, strengthening business support, and helping youth-owned businesses grow and become more competitive.
It also aims to boost township and rural economies while encouraging job creation through youth entrepreneurship.

Wits Donald Gordon Medical Centre has installed Africa’s first liver perfusion machine, a breakthrough expected to increase the number of donor livers available for life-saving transplants.
The technology keeps donor livers viable outside the body for longer than traditional cold storage, giving specialists more time to assess organ function before surgery and making it possible to use organs that may previously have been considered too risky.
The hospital says the innovation could reduce post-transplant complications, shorten hospital stays and improve recovery for patients.
More than 4,300 South Africans are currently waiting for organ transplants, while fewer than one percent of the population is registered as organ donors.
