Wits Donald Gordon Medical Centre has installed Africa’s first liver perfusion machine, a breakthrough expected to increase the number of donor livers available for life-saving transplants.
The technology keeps donor livers viable outside the body for longer than traditional cold storage, giving specialists more time to assess organ function before surgery and making it possible to use organs that may previously have been considered too risky.
The hospital says the innovation could reduce post-transplant complications, shorten hospital stays and improve recovery for patients.

South African documentary wins Cannes Film Award for mining impact film

A South African documentary highlighting the environmental impact of mining on the West Coast has won a Cannes Film Award.
Out of Mined, directed by Arthur Neumeier and produced by Eyeforce in partnership with Protect the West Coast, received the award in the Work in Progress category, which recognises films still in development.
The film explores the effects of mining on coastal communities, biodiversity and the environment, while also showcasing the region’s natural beauty. It recently premiered in Cape Town and will now continue its international festival run.
The team says the recognition helps amplify the voices of affected communities and brings global attention to South Africa’s West Coast.

A remarkable father-and-son team of cardiac surgeons is changing lives at the Netcare Christiaan Barnard Memorial Hospital in Cape Town.
Dr Willie Koen and his son, Dr Johan Koen, are believed to be South Africa’s only known father-son cardiac surgery partnership, working side by side in complex heart procedures.
Dr Willie Koen, who trained under pioneering heart surgeon Christiaan Barnard, has now passed on decades of experience to his son, who returned from training in Toronto.
Together, they’ve been involved in life-saving transplants, including procedures that have given patients like Rhys Thomas a second chance at life.
The pair say their shared mission is to extend and improve lives through advanced cardiac care.
