SA artist wins 2026 New Contemporaries Award

South African artist Simnikiwe Buhlungu has won the 2026 MTN x UJ New Contemporaries Award at the National Arts Festival in Makhanda.
The Johannesburg-born artist received a R100,000 prize in recognition of her installation exploring identity, memory and shared histories through sound and visual art.
Buhlungu's work was selected by an independent panel from four finalists exhibiting at the festival.
The award recognises emerging South African artists whose work contributes to contemporary art.

Keep Cape Town warm exceeds winter drive goals

The Keep Cape Town Warm campaign has raised R310,000 and collected more than 3,000 blankets and over 12,000 food items after an eight-week drive in Cape Town.
Residents, schools, businesses and community partners joined forces to support vulnerable families during winter.
Donations were distributed throughout the campaign to help vulnerable families and shelters before the coldest part of winter.
The funds will be used to buy more blankets, food and essential supplies, while part of the proceeds will support community upliftment programmes across the city.
