Hands of Maraisburg Launch First Clean-Up of 2026
Story 1
The Hands of Maraisburg team kicked off their first clean-up of the year on Saturday, January 24, focusing on Shamrock Street.
Volunteers worked early in the morning with brooms, spades, and grass-cutting machines to clear the pavement near the old age home, cut overgrown grass on the triangle, and remove reeds blocking a drain.
The non-profit, founded in May 2025, has been dedicated to improving the neighbourhood through clean-ups, service delivery meetings, and education about illegal dumping.
Organisers are encouraging more community members to join future efforts.

Take-Home Pay Shows Real Growth in South Africa
Story 2
The Paying Net Salary Index, which tracks how much workers actually take home after taxes and inflation, shows that South Africans earning between R5,000 and R100,000 a month saw their pay rise in real terms in 2025.
This marks the second year in a row that salaries have grown faster than inflation, giving workers a bit of breathing room after years of rising living costs.
Economist Elize Kruger says increases are steadier now, but fair, helping households feel the benefits of their wages.
