Two Gauteng learners selected for GENIUS Olympiad in USA
Story 1
Two Gauteng learners, Johan Vorster and Gustav Heesen, have been selected to represent South Africa at the GENIUS Olympiad in Rochester, USA in June 2026.
The Grade 8 learners from Pretoria Boys High School and Afrikaans Hoër Seunskool developed an AI project to support teachers in overcrowded classrooms.
They won the Imbewu Science Fair and later placed second runners-up at a national science symposium.
Their results secured selection for the international competition, where they will present their project alongside young scientists from around the world.
A fundraising campaign is underway to cover travel, accommodation, visas and competition costs for their participation.

orthern Cape Film Variations on a Theme Opens 8 May

A Northern Cape film, Variations on a Theme, opens in cinemas across Cape Town and Johannesburg on 8 May for a one-week run.
Directed by Jason Jacobs and Devon Delmar, the film follows a Kharkams goat herder who is targeted by a scam promising money owed for her father’s service in World War II.
The production cast local residents, with 80-year-old Hettie Farmer making her film debut in the lead role.
The film has won the Tiger Award in Rotterdam and Best African Film at the Joburg Film Festival, and recently screened for the Kharkams community.

Today is the final day to apply for a writing programme by eThekwini Municipality libraries aimed at children aged five to 15.
The “I Want to Write a Book” initiative trains selected participants through workshops and mentorship to develop storytelling skills and produce their own published work.
The programme forms part of the Articulate Africa Art and Book Fair and allows participants to create original stories and compete for selection as literary ambassadors.
