The National Sea Rescue Institute’s Survival Swimming programme has been expanded at Rhodes University in Makhanda, offering students the chance to gain essential water safety skills.
Many participants, who previously had little or no access to swimming lessons, are now learning to float, breathe calmly and move safely in water through structured and supportive training sessions.
The programme also aims to reduce fear of water in communities by equipping adults with skills they can pass on to children. Interest continues to grow, with hundreds of students already on the waiting list.
