Strong Summer Crop Forecast Signals Boost for Agriculture
Story 2
South Africa’s 2025 to 2026 summer crop season is off to a strong start, with early forecasts pointing to a record harvest of 20 point 8 million tonnes. Good rainfall and expanded plantings are driving gains in key crops including maize, soybeans and sunflower seed, which make up the bulk of local production.
While some smaller crops are expected to decline, the overall outlook remains positive.
Chief Economist of the Agricultural Business Chamber Wandile Sihlobo says the strong season could support food supply, ease price pressure and strengthen the agricultural sector’s contribution to the economy.*
