Gauteng Selects 18 Students for Cuba

The Gauteng Department of Health has selected 18 aspiring doctors to study medicine in Cuba under the Nelson Mandela Fidel Castro medical training programme.
They were selected from about 2,500 applicants across the province, following a screening process that included interviews and home visits.
The programme gives preference to students from lower-income families and disadvantaged schools.
The students will return to South Africa after their studies to complete clinical training and serve in the public healthcare system.

A donation of wool is helping Parktown High School learners turn their knitting skills into support for people in need.
The school’s KnitWits received the wool from Wits Donald Gordon Medical Centre after a Nelson Mandela Day collection.
The learners will use it to make scarves, blankets and other items for people who need extra warmth.
The donation will also allow more learners to join the project and help extend its reach into the community.
