The Gauteng Department of Health has selected 18 aspiring doctors to study medicine in Cuba under the Nelson Mandela Fidel Castro medical training programme.
They were selected from about 2,500 applicants across the province, following a screening process that included interviews and home visits.
The programme gives preference to students from lower-income families and disadvantaged schools.
The students will return to South Africa after their studies to complete clinical training and serve in the public healthcare system.

Applications for the 2026 Shell LiveWire Enterprise Development Programme are now open to South African entrepreneurs, with support aimed at helping small and medium-sized businesses grow and create jobs.
The programme offers coaching, business planning, market access and funding-readiness support, depending on the stage of the business.
Businesses with annual revenue of up to 50-million rand can apply.
Applications close on 9 September.

MultiChoice has handed over a new multipurpose sports facility to a primary school in Eldorado Park.
The facility is intended to serve both learners and the wider community.
The company says the project aims to give young people access to sport and positive activities.
The initiative is summed up by its slogan: “Keep the children in sport, to keep them out of court.”
Eldorado Park-born football legend Stanton Fredericks says he hopes the facility will give more young players from the community the opportunity to follow in his footsteps:
