Mandela Park tree highlights heritage and environmental conservation
Story 3
The Deputy Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment Bernice Swarts visited Mandela Park in Steyn City, where a wild olive tree grown from a seed planted by the former President Nelson Mandela continues to serve as a symbol of heritage and environmental stewardship.
The visit coincided with Heritage Day celebrations and forms part of the Presidetial One Billion Trees campaign.
The tree was planted in 2015 by former First Lady Graça Machel, using a sapling that was grown from a seed sown by the former president during his visit to the site in 2007.
The department says the national campaign follows the planting of more than 1.3 million trees across the country last year.
