NASA Rover Sets Mars Distance Record
Teaser / Tailpiece story
NASA's Perseverance rover has set a new record after travelling more than 45 kilometres across the surface of Mars since arriving there in 2021.
The rover is exploring an area that scientists believe was once covered by water, searching for signs that tiny living organisms may have existed on Mars billions of years ago.
It has now travelled farther than NASA's Opportunity rover, with more than 90 percent of its driving handled by an onboard system that helps it avoid obstacles and choose safe routes.
NASA has extended the mission to around 2028, allowing the rover to continue studying ancient rocks on the planet.
