Cape Town taxi industry pilots cashless payment system

The Cape Organisation for the Democratic Taxi Association has begun piloting a cashless payment system aimed at making taxi travel safer and more convenient for commuters.
Passengers on selected routes can use payment cards or digital payment options instead of cash, reducing the risk of robberies linked to carrying money.
The initiative also includes plans for in taxi cameras and payment scanners as part of efforts to modernise operations. Codeta says the pilot phase will help assess the system before a wider rollout across its network.

The City of Johannesburg Department of Social Development Food Resilience Unit, in partnership with Diepkloof Square, hosted a market day in celebration of World Hunger Day.
Small-scale farmers, agro-processors and local businesses from Diepkloof and surrounding areas gathered to showcase their products and highlight the importance of sustainable livelihoods and food security.
Diepkloof Square management says the initiative is linked to plans to convert unused land behind the mall into a community garden that will support local production and create income opportunities.
Exhibitors say the event also gave them a platform to market their products and raise awareness about the value of locally grown food.
