Innovative Water Recycling Project Launched in Ekurhuleni
Story 3
An innovative water recycling project has been launched at the Manger Care Centre in Ekurhuleni, with the aim of reducing water waste and improving long term water security.
The new facility treats greywater from showers, kitchens and laundry separately from toilet waste, allowing up to 5 000 litres of water a day to be safely reused for irrigation, laundry and toilet flushing. The project is a partnership between the Zurich University of Applied Sciences, Stellenbosch University and the Manger Care Centre.
Researchers hope the low cost system, which uses naturally occurring microorganisms instead of chemicals, can eventually be rolled out to informal settlements and rural communities across South Africa.

Zimbabwe's Friendship Bench Offers Hope Through Community Counselling
Teaser / Tailpiece story
A simple wooden bench is changing lives in Zimbabwe by providing a place where people can talk openly about depression, anxiety and emotional distress.
The Friendship Bench programme trains elderly women, known as grandmothers, to offer counselling on benches at community clinics, making mental health support easier to access. Launched in Harare in 2006, the initiative has now helped more than one million people and is expanding to other countries after its success.
Founder Professor Dixon Chibanda says the programme shows there are alternative, community based ways of navigating mental health that can make support more accessible to those who need it.
